Stichting Bouwresearch: Dutch Construction Company

construction

Stichting Bouwresearch, SBR and later SBRCURnet is a former Dutch knowledge institute in the field of construction and building installations based in Rotterdam and later in Delft. Founded on the principles of promoting construction practices through research and development, this organization has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of the Dutch construction industry. From pioneering sustainable construction techniques to fostering technological advances, Stichting Bouwresearch has left an indelible mark on the sector.

Setup

The goal of the 1959 founding of the Bouwresearch Foundation was to promote and coordinate forschung into innovative construction techniques. Herman Witte, a former priest, served as the first president. The CUR Center for Implementation, Research, and Regulation of Civil Engineering, the surviving partner of the merger, established itself in 1952, seven years before the merger.

These interest organizations emerged from the reconstruction that followed World War II.  At the time, in addition to the massive quantity of construction required, people had limited knowledge about the properties and forces of the primary building materials, reinforced and prestressed concrete. The CUR sought to impart the required expertise to building enterprises.

At that time, the sector was still mainly made up of small companies, which could learn from each other in the application of new construction methods that were developing rapidly at that time. The Bouwresearch Foundation was for a long time located in the Groothandelsgebouw in Rotterdam, opposite the Bouwcentrum.

Development

In 2003, the Bouwresearch Foundation was renamed SBR. At that time about 50 people worked there, headed by engineer Jack de Leeuw. The Construction Research Foundation published several books on topics such as equipment management, cost control, financing and policy planning in the construction industry; transportation during the construction process; and building security. The SBR was also known for its standards on vibration in building installations.

In 2013, Stichting Bouwresearch merged with CURnet to form SBRCURnet, which was located at De Bouwcampus on the grounds of the Delft University of Technology. About 50 people worked there under the direction of Jeannette Baljeu.

SBRCURnet worked as a knowledge partner with committees that developed and recorded new construction and civil engineering knowledge. He also worked in practice, on construction sites and on projects. In this way he developed and distributed construction knowledge for free and paid. The most popular products were SBR Reference Details, Fact Sheets and CUR Recommendations.
